THE VILLAGE

OUR SHELTER FOR PREGNANT AND PARENTING TRANSITION AGE YOUTH and their children

At Waking the Village, we believe that shelters should provide more than just protection from the elements. They should provide a sense of safety, love, comfort, family, and home. We also believe shelters must be way stations, always leading to the next best destination. Located in a safe home in a quiet neighborhood, the Village centers on a daily program of engagement with the goal of discerning best housing fit and creating traction toward long term wellness and stability. Our youth development teams ensures housing connections happen quickly and youth are matched with the housing program that best fits their support needs while also connecting to supports in wellness, employment, education, and parenting. The Village is staffed with three youth development coaches and a house director and also connects youth to our licensed childcare, youth employment, wellness, and prevention and intervention programs.

Each youth’s journey will be unique. Some may move from our shelter into one of Waking the Village’s transitional living communities. Some may work with our intervention team to clear small barriers to renting or reunifying with family. Some may need intensive wellness support and will connect with Behavioral Health permanent supportive housing options. Our goal is to get young parents and their children into housing to immediately reduce trauma, use that opportunity to ensure engagement and identify best fit, next step housing, and create a strong connection to the next housing step.
